Kosovo Defense Academy

Kosovo Defense Academy, commonly known as Center for University Studies (CUS) is a Kosovar service academy in Pristina, Kosovo, responsible for education of cadets for for service as commissioned officers in the Kosovo Security Force. The academy was founded in 2005 and currently it is the only service academy in Kosovo.[1]

Kosovo Defense Academy provides education outside the campus. KDA has an agreement for the education of cadets for four years with the American University in Kosovo, also known as the Rochester Institute Of Technology. RIT is consistently ranked among the top American Universities and is continuously increasing its rank. The degree you will earn at RIT Kosovo is a fully recognized university degree from RIT New York. RIT Kosovo is accredited by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Kosovo. At the same time, KDA provides military education to cadets inside the campus.[3]

Cadets study different Majors at the same time with Minors.

Cadets study, general studies for two years and then they are free to choose what field they will master in.

Physical

KDA well prepares its cadets in physical skills. Cadets are required to physically train every day.

Cadets are required to take a physical test every semester, with the passage percentage of 60% which includes;

  1. 2400 meters run
  2. Push-Ups
  3. Sit-Ups (Crunches)
  4. Shuttle-run
  5. Standing Long Jump
  6. Plank

This test shows the cardiovascular, upper body, and lower body strength of each cadet, its maximum is 100% for each exercise in a total of 600%.

KDA cadets are often required to ruck-march within the time limit.

Admissions

KDA offers up to 23 vacancies per class and competition is usually quite high. The competition usually opens in June each year and has certain admission requirements. Candidates are required to have these general standards;

  • Be from 18 to 22 years old.
  • Successfully completed high school with a GPA not lower than 3.0 in the Kosovo weighted system.
  • Have good knowledge of the English Language (Reading, Speaking, and Writing).
  • Be legally competent.

If the person achieves the title of candidate, then he/she must undertake these steps:

  • Essay in English
  • Successfully pass the admission physical test ( Push-Ups - ( Minimum 42 reps. Maximum 71 reps. ), Sit-Ups - (Minimum 53 reps. Maximum 78 reps. ) and Run 3200 meters - ( Minimum 15:54 min, Maximum 13:00)) Minimum indicates the limit to pass the test, but achieving as many points make you competitive. The exercises must be done according to military standards as shown by instructors otherwise they won't be counted.
  • Successfully pass the English language test provided by KSF, which may be ALCPT or ECL.
  • Successfully pass the General Knowledge Test which includes 30 questions.
  • Successfully pass the Intelligence Test which also includes 30 questions.
  • Successfully pass the Interview (First answering some questions on a sheet and then questioned by a commission of three officers, and helping staff).
  • Successfully pass the medical examinations.
  • Math Test (25 questions)
  • Leadership Test
  • Achieve the appointed number of points in the TOEFL English test (paper-based).
  • Successfully pass Week 0 ( this week has eliminative character, challenging mental, character and physical abilities).

If these standards are not met, then the candidate will be automatically eliminated.[4]

Traditions

Freshmen (new cadets) are welcomed with a special ceremony called the Welcoming Day.

There is a tradition that after cadets have ruck-marched, whoever gets to be first on the marching gets a free day (24 hours)

Cadets of KDA get to wear a ring that includes the elements of the class, like the graduating year, symbol of the class, motto, etc.

Cadets run every year to honor the Kosovo Liberation Army Epic, they run for three days 5, 6, and 7 March every 4 hours.[5]

Cadets Life

Cadets have to live for four years inside the academy. Days vary , sometimes they have to go to the university to study or to the academy for military lessons. Cadets are dismissed for the weekend unless they are not punished by upperclassmen for not doing anything right during the weekdays.

International Cooperation

KDA is a member of the International Association of Military Academies.

KDA is also very cooperative with military academies of NATO countries, as it has its very beginning based on Citadel Military Academy standards.

KDA has organized the International Symposium of Military Academies (ISOMA 2025)[6]

KDA cadets have participated in the Sandhurst Military Academies Competition organized by the US Military Academy - West Point for the first time in 2025.[7]

Kosovo Defense Academy has developed a cadets exchange program with the Royal Canadian Military Academy.[8]

Commissioning as 2nd Lieutenants at KSF

Cadets who successfully graduate from Kosovo Defense Academy are commissioned at the Kosovo Security Force as 2nd Lieutenants. They may be commissioned in different branches of KSF such as Infantry, Aviation, Military Police, Logistics etc.
