Kiran Babu Pun

Kiran Babu Pun (born 8 June 1990) is a Nepali folk singer, songwriter, composer, music producer, and cultural administrator. He has been active since the early 2010s, known for his folk compositions and collaborative works . In January 2024, he was appointed as Managing Director (General Manager) of the Nepal Sanskritik Sansthan (Cultural Corporation).[1][2]

Early life and background

Born on 8 June 1990 in Nepal, Pun earned a postgraduate degree in music. Early in his career, he researched intangible folk traditions across the country and worked with cultural organizations focused on preservation.[3]

Musical career

Pun’s discography spans a variety of folk-themed songs where he is credited as lyricist, composer, and often producer. These include:

  • Maina Chari, a Teej song released on 7 July 2017 — he wrote the lyrics and composed it.[4]
  • Timrai Lagi Marna Banki Chha, Man Mandir, Dukhad Ghadi, Sanumaya, and Ekadeshko Katha — all credited to him for composition, lyrics, and production, with vocal collaborations from Tika Pun, Ramji Khand, Chhabi Pariyar, Nar Bahadur Singh, among others.[5][6]

He is further credited for additional releases like Sai Hajur and Shubhakamana 2080 on streaming services.[7][8]

Administrative career

On 8 Magh 2080 B.S. (≈22 January 2024), Pun assumed the role of Managing Director (General Manager) of Nepal Sanskritik Sansthan following a Cabinet appointment.[9][10] During his term, he pursued a policy framework encapsulated by संस्कृति + प्रकृति + जनशक्ति = समृद्धि, focusing on heritage preservation and community engagement.[11]

Key initiatives include:

  • Restoration and performance of the musical play Munamadan at the “Shubharambha Sanskritik Saajh 2082” event.[12]
  • Launching weekly cultural programs across Nepal’s seven provinces to promote folk arts.[13]

Serves as member-secretary of the Board of Directors of Sanskritik Sansthan. His tenure as General Manager runs from 3 Magh 2080 to 8 Magh 2083 B.S. (approx. Jan 2024–Jan 2027).[14]
