Kanchana 4 (marketed as Muni 5: Kanchana 4) is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language comedy horror film written, directed, and co-produced by Raghava Lawrence. Produced by Goldmines Telefilms, it is the fifth instalment in the Muni film series. The film stars Lawrence, Pooja Hegde and Nora Fatehi in the lead roles, with Kovai Sarala, Devadarshini, Sriman, Ramachandra Raju, Hima Bindhu, and Redin Kingsley in supporting roles.

Following the success of Kanchana 2 (2015), Lawrence confirmed that more films in the series would continue to be made. The fifth instalment was officially announced in April 2019, shortly before the release of the fourth film, Kanchana 3. Principal photography commenced in January 2025 in Chennai, followed by schedules in Pollachi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

The Muni film series, known for blending horror, comedy, and social issues, gained a cult following with Kanchana (2011) and Kanchana 2 (2015).[2][3] Following the success of Kanchana 2 (2015), series star Raghava Lawrence confirmed that films in the horror-comedy franchise would continue to be made.[4][5] The fifth instalment was officially announced in April 2019, coinciding with the theatrical success of Kanchana 3.[6] It was reported to be funded by Sun Pictures, as Lawrence was already signed by the studio.[7][8] Production was reportedly set to begin in 2020,[9][10] but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Lawrence's acting commitments.[11]

In June 2024, reports resurfaced stating that pre-production was nearly complete,[12] with shooting slated to begin in September 2024, as Lawrence finalized the script.[13][14] Goldmines Telefilms, which had successfully distributed the Hindi-dubbed versions of the earlier films,[a] stepped in as the primary producer, with Manish Shah collaborating with Lawrence's Raghavendra Productions.[15][16][17] The film is being made on an estimated budget of ₹65 crore (US$7.7 million).[1]

Pre-production

In April 2023, while speaking to the media in Madurai, Lawrence confirmed that he had begun writing the script for Kanchana 4.[18] At a promotional event for Jigarthanda DoubleX in Hyderabad in October 2023, Lawrence confirmed that the film was in the scripting stage.[19][20] He shared that script development was underway, addressing fans' anticipation for the next chapter in the horror-comedy series.[21] However, he also expressed personal apprehensions about the horror genre, noting that thoughts of ghost movies sometimes scared him and led to dreams about ghosts.[21] Despite these fears, Lawrence assured fans that the film would move forward, though he did not provide specific details about the plot or cast at the time.[21] The script was finalized by June 2024,[22][23] which he confirmed the following month.[24] In July 2024, he revealed that shooting would commence only after completing Benz.[25] Later, he went Mumbai to finalize the entire cast and crew of the film.[26] However, in December 2024, he announced that, due to delays in starting Benz, they planned to begin shooting Kanchana 4 in the meantime.[27]

Casting

Pooja Hegde was cast to play the lead actress, marking her first collaboration with Lawrence. Nora Fatehi makes her Tamil debut with this film.

In September 2024, Lawrence finalized the cast.[28] Pooja Hegde was cast as the female lead, marking her first collaboration with Lawrence.[29][30] Reports claim that she will portray a ghost in the film.[31][32] Nora Fatehi joined the project in January 2025 for a pivotal role, making her Tamil cinema debut.[33][34] Later, rumors surfaced that Mrunal Thakur was being considered for a lead role.[35][36] However, Lawrence denied Thakur's inclusion in the film on X, clarifying that no such casting decision had been made and that official announcements would come solely through Raghavendra Productions.[37][38]

Returning actors from previous installments include Kovai Sarala, Devadarshini, Sriman reprising their supporting roles.[39][40] Ramachandra Raju, known for his antagonistic role in KGF: Chapter 1 (2018), was cast as the villain.[41] In February 2025, serial actress Hima Bindhu was reported to appear in the film, marking her feature film debut.[42][43] The same month, Redin Kingsley was confirmed to be part of the film.[44][45] In May 2025, the child actor Kamalesh Jagan confirmed that he is a part of the cast.[46][47]

Filming

The film was predominantly shot in Chennai, Pollachi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai

Principal photography commenced on 23 January 2025 in Chennai without a formal announcement.[48][49] The first schedule included scenes shot in Chennai,[50] followed by a second schedule in Pollachi,[51] where filming took place at the Masani Amman temple.[52][53] Filming then took place at a specially erected set in a village in Thiruvallur district, where action sequences were shot.[54]

The production then moved to Hyderabad for the third schedule.[55] After wrapping the Hyderabad schedule, the next schedule began in Mumbai in March 2025.[56] Reportedly, an aeroplane crash sequence was filmed from 9 March 2025 for five days, at a specially erected set in Naigaon City Studios, Mumbai.[57] The fourth schedule was completed by April 2025 in East Coast Road, Chennai.[41] By June 2025, 40% of the filming was complete.[58] A schedule was completed in Mahabalipuram on 12 July 2025.[59] Hegde participated in this schedule.[60][61]

Kanchana 4 is scheduled for theatrical release in 2026[62] in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam languages.[63][64] The film will also be screened in national multiplexes.[65]
