Kallada Das is an Indian politician and trade union leader from Kollam district, Kerala. He currently serves as the State Chairman of Kerala Congress (Secular) and has been active in state politics, student movements, and workers' unions since the early 1970s. He is known for his long-standing leadership in cooperative societies, development committees, and harbor workers’ unions across Kerala.
Political Career
[edit]Kallada Das began his political journey in 1972 through the Kerala Students Congress (KSC), the student wing of the Kerala Congress. He was elected as the State General Secretary and later as District Secretary. Following the split in Kerala Congress, he supported the faction led by K. M. George and R. Balakrishna Pillai.
In 1984, he led the historic All Kerala OEC strike, a 110-day continuous relay protest at the Kollam Collectorate. Despite the national crisis caused by the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the strike continued without interruption until its demands were met.
As a student leader, Das organized multiple strikes and protests advocating for student rights, education reforms, and campus democracy.
Public Service
[edit]He has served in multiple public and cooperative roles over several decades:
- Board Member, Kumbalam Service Co-operative Society, Kollam Ltd No - Q111
- Board Member, East Kallada Co-operative Society, Kollam Ltd No - Q187
- Member, Kollam Taluk Land Assignment Committee
- Member, Food Advisory Vigilance Committee
- Member, Hospital Development Committees of Kollam District Hospital and Victoria Hospital (served over 20 years)
- Chairman, Chittumala Block-Level Expert Committee
- Member, District-Level Expert Committee
Das was also a State Resource Person for the People’s Campaign for Decentralised Planning, collaborating with leaders like Dr. T. M. Thomas Isaac, Smt. Kamala Vijayan, E. M. Sasi, Smt. J. Chinchurani, and Dr. T. N. Seema.
Activism
[edit]He played a key role in the protest surrounding the controversial Lillykutty murder case, which was initially ruled a suicide by police. His efforts led to a reinvestigation and the eventual identification and arrest of the actual perpetrator. During the Emergency period (Adiyanthiravastha) in India, Kallada Das was actively involved in student protests advocating for democratic rights. As a result of his participation in these agitations, he was detained and held in police lockup, reflecting his early commitment to political activism and civil liberties even under harsh and repressive conditions.
Trade Union Leadership
[edit]Kallada Das is active in the Kerala Trade Union Centre (KTUC) and serves as:
- President, Neendakara Fishing Harbour Workers Union (KTUC)
- President, Thangassery Fishing Harbour Workers Union (KTUC)
- President, Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour Workers Union (KTUC)
He has held these leadership positions for over 13 years, representing the rights of harbor and fishing workers. He is also the State President of the Kerala State Cashew Workers Front, working to protect and advance the interests of laborers in the cashew industry.
Kallada Das currently serves as the Chairman of KANFED (Kerala Association for Non-formal Education and Development), an organization engaged in social and educational upliftment in Kerala. He also holds key positions in the All India Catholic Union (AICU), which functions under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). He is the District Vice President and the State Media Chairman of AICU in Kerala. Additionally, he is a Patron Member of the Kerala Latin Catholic Association (KLCA), actively participating in community welfare, religious rights advocacy, and church-related social initiatives.
In 2003, following a division within Kerala Congress (Secular) [J], the Kerala Congress (Secular) was formed as a separate faction. From that period onward, Kallada Das has remained with Kerala Congress (Secular), continuing his political journey within the party without shifting allegiance.
He has been working as the State Chairman of Kerala Congress (Secular) for the past 13 years, leading the party through various state-level initiatives and coalition politics.
During the period when Kerala Congress (J) was part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), he served as a State Committee Member representing the United Trade Union Sponsoring Committee for 19 years.
