Kota Kinabalu Reef Watch (KK Reef Watch) is a local non-profit group (NPG) that conserves the coral reef in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. It raises marine conservation awareness among high school students through an education programme called 'i see, i care, i save'.[2]

History

[edit]

In c. 2007, KK Reef Watch was founded by Salha Hassan Alban after seeing the coral reefs in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park decreasing significantly. She believed it was due to not just the rapid development but also from pressure from the tourism sector, people living around the park, and natural causes such as COT outbreaks and bleaching due to global warming.[2]

Objectives

[edit]

KK Reef Watch's objectives are mainly focused at secondary students:[1]

  • Establishing a sense of awareness on the condition of the marine habitat along the coastal water of Sabah to the students.
  • Developing students' interest in marine conservation.
  • Getting students to participate in global effort to save the marine ecosystem – introducing reef monitoring surveys, removal of crown-of-thorns starfish etc.
  • Developing networks with other environmental conservation bodies that are active within environmental awareness activities.
  • Developing a module for marine education in Sabah.
