Juliany Taveras is a Dominican-American theatre-maker, playwright, screenwriter, and arts educator. [1] Their work centers themes of Afro/Indigenous and queer/trans diaspora.[2]
They received critical acclaim for their stage adaption of Christine Baldacchino's children's book Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress. This adaptation was co-commissioned by Children's Theatre Company, Chicago Children’s Theatre, and The Omaha Rose Theatre.[3]
Taveras is a graduate of Vassar College (2016)[4] and the St. Joseph's College Writer's Foundry.[1]
Taveras' playwriting has been nationally recognized. They received an honorable mention on the Kilroys' List 2016.[5] They were featured as a playwright in the 50 Playwrights Project List 2018.[6] They were also a finalist for the Page 73 Playwriting Fellowship.[7] In 2021 they were featured in the Crossing Borders (Cruzando Fronteras) Festival, a new play festival that celebrates work by Latinx playwrights.[8] In 2022, they were commissioned by Atlantic Theater Company along with Bleu Beckford-Burrell, Shayan Lotfi, and Roger Q. Mason, to create short one-acts and present them as an evening of readings as part of their First Gen MixFest programming.[1]
In addition to playwriting, Taveras is also a screenwriter. They are a writer for the Amazon Original series With Love (TV series).[9][10] Taveras is currently working with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Louise Bagnall’s and animation studio, Cartoon Saloon on a feature titled Julián, based on the picture book Julián is a Mermaid by Jessica Love.[11]
