Jessica Barden (born 21 July 1992) is an English actress. She is best known for her role as Alyssa in the Channel 4 and Netflix television series The End of the F***ing World (2017–2019). Barden has also appeared in films such as Hanna (2011), The Lobster (2015), and Holler (2020).

Early life

Barden was born in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, England.[1] She moved to Wetherby, West Yorkshire, when she was three years old, and attended Wetherby High School.[2]

Career

Barden began her acting career with small roles in television series such as My Parents Are Aliens and No Angels. In 2007, she joined the cast of the ITV soap opera Coronation Street as Kayleigh Morton, appearing until 2008.[3]

She gained wider recognition with her role as Alyssa in the black comedy-drama series The End of the F***ing World, based on the graphic novel by Charles Forsman. The series premiered on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and on Netflix internationally, receiving critical acclaim for its writing and performances.[4]

In addition to her television work, Barden has appeared in films including Hanna (2011) alongside Saoirse Ronan, The Lobster (2015) directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, and Holler (2020), for which she received praise for her performance.[5]

Personal life

In October 2021, Barden announced that she had given birth to her first child.[6] She has discussed topics such as mental health and class issues in interviews.[7]
