Jeremy Hugh Gordon (22 January 1947 - 15 May 2024) was an Australian painter and printmaker based in Hahndorf, South Australia.[1] Known for his work in both painting and printmaking, Jeremy was active in the Australian art scene from the early 1970s.[2]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Jeremy Hugh Gordon was born in Adelaide, South Australia on January 22 1947 to John Vivian Gordon and Margaret Gordon (née Watson).
He began his formal artistic education at the South Australian School of Art, where he studied from 1961 to 1963. He then moved to Sydney to continue his studies at East Sydney Technical College from 1963 to 1965, where he had the opportunity to study under the renowned Australian painter Sir William Dobell.
International Studies
[edit]In pursuit of further artistic development, Jeremy traveled to London in 1963 where he studied at the [Hammersmith Art School] and at the Byam Shaw School of Art.
At the Byam Shaw School, he distinguished himself by winning the Painting Prize and earning a Diploma of Fine Art. He spent the years 1968-69 in England and Europe, undertaking an extensive tour that have exposed him to various European artistic traditions and contemporary movements.
Jeremy returned to Australia in 1969, bringing with him the influences and techniques he had absorbed during his international studies along with his wife and young son.
Career

[edit]Jeremy Gordon's professional career began in earnest in 1971 with his first exhibition at the [Joseph Brown Gallery] in Melbourne, followed by nine significant exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
Artistic Practice
[edit]Jeremy Gordon works primarily as a painter and printmaker. His practice encompassed oil paintings on canvas and board, watercolours and work with gesso and eg tempera, as well as printmaking using a variety of techniques including zinc etching and leatherwork printing.
Personal Life
[edit]Jeremy was married to artist and educator Maureen Gordon (né Robinson) in 1968. After returning from the UK in 1969 they lived in Adelaide, before moving to Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills in 1995.
Collections
[edit]The majority of Jeremy's work is held in private hands with notable owners including the Central Bank of Australia and the Art Gallery of South Australia with holds "Protestant High Altar" in it's collection.
