Jehsong Baak

Jehsong Baak (born September 5, 1967) is a Korean-American photographer based in Paris, France. His photography, characterized by intimate and emotional black-and-white images, explores themes of solitude, memory, and autobiographical storytelling. His work is included in the collections of Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., Houston Museum of Fine Arts.


Biography

Baak was born on September 5, 1967 in Junju, South Korea. He emigrated to the United States with his father, stepmother and half-siblings in 1977, living first in North Carolina and Alabama before settling in Maryland. He started taking photographs at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland. Dropping out of the University of Michigan after one year, he moved to New York City to pursue photography. In 1998, he relocated to Paris, France where he continues to live and work.


Publications

He gained early recognition with his first book, Là ou Ailleurs, published in 2006 by the French publisher Robert Delpire, with an introduction by poet and art critic Alain Jouffroy (ISBN ). This was followed by Photographs in 2008 published by HUP Gallery in Amsterdam, Netherlands, One Last Goodbye in 2016 - about his early years in New York City (ISBN ), and Istanbul, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow in 2024 - in collaboration with the French writer and diplomat, Sébastien de Courtois, published by Éditions du Loco in Paris (ISBN ).
