Jan Edlman (born 19 August 1977 in Litomyšl, then Czechoslovakia) is a Czech painter, sculptor, and writer based in Prague. His work includes oil painting, figurative sculpture, and philosophical fiction. He is the author of an original artistic style he calls "geometric figurative deconstructivism."
Life and education
[edit]Edlman grew up in Litomyšl, a historic town in eastern Bohemia, where he was influenced by its cultural heritage. From early childhood, he engaged in artistic activities, particularly music and drawing. He studied at local schools and later graduated from the Faculty of Law at Charles University in Prague.
Professionally, he worked in marketing and innovation, notably with Omnicom Group in Prague and ŠKODA X, focusing on projects related to digital media, smart cities, and sustainable mobility. Despite his corporate career, he continuously pursued art, formally studying sculpture and painting after 2014.
Artistic work
[edit]Edlman studied sculpture under Magdalena Bohuslava Poplawska and later oil painting under various instructors from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. His artistic focus intensified after 2022, especially following the unexpected death of his father, which deeply influenced the themes of his work.
His paintings often explore the relationship between harmony and chaos, incorporating spiritual, political, cosmic, and social motifs. He frequently uses geometric forms—lines, circles, and polygons—in both abstract and figurative compositions.
In 2023, Edlman developed a visual style known as "geometric figurative deconstructivism," in which figures are broken down into fundamental geometric forms and restructured into coherent compositions, drawing conceptual parallels to Cubism.
Alongside oil painting, he creates smaller abstract works and serigraph prints. He also integrates digital tools and artificial intelligence in his creative process, while ensuring that the final works remain fully authored by him.

Literature
[edit]Edlman is the author of the short story collection Tíha poznání (The Burden of Knowledge), which deals with themes of epistemology, existential search, and metaphysics. His fiction combines philosophical inquiry with narrative reflection, influenced by spirituality, interpersonal relationships, and archetypal figures. His style can be compared to the tradition of Karel Čapek, for its focus on moral dilemmas and critical reasoning.[4]
