Jamie Alter Lynton (born Jamie Alter) is an American journalist, civic activist and political fundraiser. She founded the education-news website LA School Report in 2012 and later brokered its 2016 merger with the national outlet The 74.[1][2] Lynton is co-chair of the board of directors of The City (website), a nonprofit newsroom covering New York City,[3] and serves on the board of trustees of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).[4]

Career

[edit]

Early work

[edit]

Jamie Alter Lynton is former reporter and news producer for CNN and Court TV.[1] Notably she was the producer on the Rodney King documentary The Rodney King Case: What the Jury Saw in California v. Powell for which she was nominated for a Cable ACE Award.[5]

Political Fundraising

[edit]

Lynton was an early supporter for Barack Obama, hosting fundraisers for his 2004 Senate bid. [6] She became a prominent Democratic “bundler” during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign, organizing numerous California events and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Barack Obama.[7]

LA School Report (2012–2016)

[edit]

Responding to what she viewed as limited local coverage of public-school governance, Lynton launched LA School Report in late 2012.[1] Under her ownership the site broke several stories on charter-school expansion and Los Angeles Unified School District politics. In February 2016 she arranged for The 74 to absorb the newsroom, joining its governing board in the process.[2]

THE CITY (2021–present)

[edit]

Since 2021 Lynton has served as chair, and later co-chair, of the board of directors of The City (website), a nonprofit digital newsroom focused on New York City government and civic life.[3]

Involvement with Snap Inc.

[edit]

In 2013, Lynton noticed her teenage daughters’ enthusiasm for the then-fledgling messaging app Snapchat. Impressed by its privacy focused design, she emailed the app’s generic customer-service address to praise the product. She got a response directly from Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel and invited him over for dinner to discuss it further.[8][9]

Spiegel arrived “within the hour,” according to Jamie Lynton's husband, and now Snapchat Chairman, Michael Lynton, and soon asked the couple to become early investors.

Other board service

[edit]

Lynton was elected a trustee of New York Public Radio (WNYC) in 2017,[10] and is a trustee of CalArts.[4] Lynton also sits on the board of directors of the High Line in New York.[11]

Personal life

[edit]

In 1993 she married media executive Michael Lynton.[12] The couple live in Los Angeles and New York City and have three daughters. Jaime Lynton is the daughter of activist and politician Joanne H. Alter and sister to journalist Jonathan Alter.
