Early Life and Education

[edit]

Abdourahman was born in Djibouti, East Africa, and is a member of the Afar ethnic group. In his dream to served as a diplomat, he aspired to travel the world representing his country. He arrived in Toronto, Canada, in 1990—first as a refugee and later as an international student. In 1993, he relocated to Vancouver, drawn by the region’s natural beauty and multicultural environment. Fluent in five languages and conversational in over six others, Abdourahman pursued college studies with the goal of working for the United Nations..[1].

Career Beginnings

[edit]

While studying, Abdourahman began organizing fashion trunk shows and pop-up events in unconventional venues such as nightclubs, hotels, and warehouses. A pivotal moment came when a nightclub owner invited him to produce a “what’s in your trunk” fashion show. These early ventures led to the opening of a clothing store on Robson Street in Vancouver. He later partnered with an investor to host fashion shows in Asia, prompting him to close the store and travel extensively to fashion hubs including Hong Kong, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, London, and Paris. His attendance at Paris Fashion Week in 1999 helped lay the foundation for launching his own fashion event[1][2]

Vancouver Fashion Week

[edit]

In 2000, Abdourahman co-founded International Fashion Week, which was rebranded as Vancouver Fashion Week in 2002. Under his leadership, VFW has grown into Canada’s largest fashion week and the second-largest in North America. The event is held biannually and features designers from around the world, with a focus on inclusivity and diversity. VFW has served as a gateway for designers unable to showcase in major fashion capitals[3]

Abdourahman continues to promote VFW globally, traveling to fashion weeks across South America, Asia, Europe, and North America to meet designers, forge partnerships, and raise Vancouver’s profile in the fashion industry. He has accumulated over one million air miles in pursuit of this mission.[1]

Additional Ventures and Achievements

[edit]

In 2014, Abdourahman introduced the Nancy Mak Award, which supports emerging British Columbia-based designers with strong creative vision and business potential.[4]. In 2016, he launched Vancouver Kids Fashion Week, a platform dedicated to children’s fashion [5]. In 2017, he founded the Global Fashion Collective, which produces shows alongside New York, Tokyo, and Paris Fashion Weeks [3][6]. In 2018, VFW began publishing Micro Macro Magazine, a digital publication focused on fashion, design, and culture [3]

Personal Life and Vision

His philosophy centers on transforming the impossible into the possible and creating global opportunities for fashion talent from all walks of life.[1]
