Jörg Franke, born on 7 January 1941 in Halle (Saale), is a German financial executive known for his contributions to the modernization of financial markets in Germany and Europe, particularly through the development of electronic derivatives trading platforms.
Early life and education
[edit]Jörg Franke obtained his Phd in law from the University of Bonn in 1971. After graduating, he worked for 14 years at Westdeutsche Landesbank in investment banking. from 1984 to 1988, he became Managing Director of the Berliner Börse and a member of the Management Board of Berliner Kassenverein AG - Wertpapiersammelbank, Berlin.[1]
Career
[edit]Architect of Deutsche Terminbörse and Eurex
[edit]In 1988, Jörg Franke was assigned to lead the creation of Deutsche Terminbörse, Germany's first fully electronic derivatives exchange. Deutsche Terminbörse began trading in January 1990, introducing innovative features such as integrated clearing and market-making systems to ensure liquidity. Deutsche Terminbörse rapidly grew in importance and in 1998 merged with the Swiss Options and Financial Futures Exchange to form Eurex, which became one of the world's leading futures and options exchanges. During this period, Franke was Chairman of Eurex Frankfurt AG and Eurex Zürich AG.[1][2][3]
During his time at Eurex, Franke focused on expanding the exchange's international reach, including forming alliances with U.S. markets to attract global participation. [4] However, the proposed alliance between Eurex and the Chicago Board of Trade faced challenges, including discussions on fee structures and management, where Franke played a central role.[5][2]
After Eurex
[edit]Jörg Franke joined the management board of Deutsche Börse AG, where he served from 1994 to 2000. In 2001, he became the CEO of Berliner Effektengesellschaft AG and later chaired its Supervisory Board until 2006.[2] [6][7]
Franke also took on several other key roles:
- Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Tradegate AG Wertpapierhandelsbank.
- Chairman of the Stock Exchange Council of Börse Berlin.[6]
- Chairman of the Federal Association of Securities Firms (Bundesverband der Wertpapierfirmen e.V.)
- Chairman of the supervisory board or RTS Realtime Systems.[1]
In 2007, he was inducted into the Futures Hall of Fame of the Futures Industry Association.[1]
Academic engagement
[edit]From 2005 to 2018, Franke serves as an honorary professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, where he contributes to teaching and research related to financial markets and system at the Institute of Finance, Banking and Insurance.[8]
