Isaac Charia (Arabic: إسحاق شارية) is a Moroccan lawyer and politician born on January 1, 1982, in Tétouan. Since 2021, he has been the Secretary-General of the Moroccan Liberal Party (PML). He is known for his outspoken positions on human rights, social justice, national sovereignty, and the protection of Morocco's cultural identity.

Early life and education

[edit]

Charia completed his primary education at Ibn Rochd School, his secondary studies at Al-Qadi Iyad Middle School and Mohammed VI High School in Martil. He earned a baccalaureate in modern literature in 2000.

He pursued legal studies at Mohammed V University in Rabat, earning a law degree in 2004. He specialized in international trade and investment law and obtained his certificate to practice law in Morocco in 2006.

[edit]

He began his legal career as an intern at the Rabat Bar, working under prominent lawyers such as Saad Benmbarek and Mohamed Ziane, a former Minister of Human Rights. Charia gained media attention for defending cases involving freedom of speech, human rights, and political prisoners.[1][2]

He has also served as a legal advisor for public institutions and diplomatic missions.

Political career

[edit]

Charia began political activism during his university years by founding a student liberal current. He joined the Moroccan Liberal Party upon its creation in 2001, rising through the ranks: youth wing president in 2009, political bureau member, and later deputy secretary-general.

In 2021, he was elected Secretary-General of the party during an extraordinary congress, succeeding Mohamed Ziane.[3]

Since taking office, Charia has led internal reforms, ideological repositioning, and advocated for an independent political stance, outside both the government and traditional opposition.[4]

International outreach and initiatives

[edit]

Under his leadership, the party established affiliated bodies such as the Sayyida al-Hurra Organization and the Az-Zawiya Foundation for Thought and Heritage. It also launched the party's official newspaper *At-Tahrir al-Maghribiya*.

Initially a member of the Liberal International, the party later withdrew due to disagreements over social values. Charia has since built ties with conservative parties in Europe and the Americas.[5]

Political positions

[edit]

Charia is a strong advocate of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. He once staged a hunger strike outside the Algerian embassy in Rabat and publicly criticized Muammar Gaddafi for supporting the Polisario Front.[6]

He frequently participates in televised debates and public conferences. In 2025, he visited the European Parliament and the Portuguese Parliament to promote Morocco's position on the Sahara issue.[7]
