Draft:International carpet festival

  • Comment: In response to a question on my talk page: There's no problem with using media from Azerbaijan (as long as it's at least regional or national, not a neighborhood/local). It doesn't even have to be in English.
The issue with the sources so far is that the links I reviewed seem to be promotional and/or from less reliable sites. For example, this about page does not inspire confidence and this does not even read like a media entity. The Diplomatic Insight is a random Pakistani magazine that decided to republish a press release it seems like (Pakistan is similar to India WP:NEWSORGINDIA. The travel sites seem promotional and/or unreliable while Cover seems to be a local trade publication.
Azernews.az looks fine but it is only one source. I think your best bet is to find sources in the local language and incorporate them. Avgeekamfot (talk) 17:24, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

The International Carpet Festival is an annual festival held in Baku, Azerbaijan, centered around the tradition of Azerbaijani carpet weaving.[1] The festival takes place in Icherisheher (Old City) and is organized by the Administration of the State Historical-Architectural Reserve "Icherisheher" and Azerkhalcha OJSC, with support from the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan[2][3] and the Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Agency (AZPROMO).[4][5][6]

History

[edit]

The inaugural National Carpet Festival was held on May 4–5, 2024. The festival was expanded to an international level in 2025.[7][8]

Festival activities

[edit]

The International Carpet Festival features various activities[9], including:

  • Exhibitions: Showcasing ancient, modern, and designer carpets.[10]
  • Masterclasses: Sessions on carpet weaving techniques.[10][11]
  • Interactive Performances: Theatrical and musical presentations related to carpet culture.[10]
  • Educational Seminars: Discussions on the history and techniques of carpet weaving.[12]
  • International Forum: A platform for global experts to discuss the future of carpet weaving.[13]

The festival coincides with Carpet Weaver's Day[14], established by a decree from President Ilham Aliyev on May 5, 2016, to honor Azerbaijani carpet artisans.[15]

Cultural significance

[edit]

Azerbaijani carpet weaving is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity[16] by UNESCO.[17][18] The International Carpet Festival is an event focused on the exhibition of traditional Azerbaijani carpet weaving, providing a venue for artisans to present their work[19] and for visitors to engage with aspects of the country's cultural heritage.[20][21]
