International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) is a global non-profit organization that conducts exchange programs in 40 countries. Founded in 1949, its mission is to promote intercultural understanding through international volunteer and cultural exchange programs. ICYE offers young people the opportunity to engage in meaningful volunteer projects while immersing themselves in different cultures to foster personal development and global engagement. Participants can live and work in a chosen host country for either six months or a full year, supporting local projects as volunteers.
History
[edit]ICYE was established in 1949 by the Protestant Brethren Church community in response to the need for reconciliation and mutual understanding in a post-war Europe. In 1957, it became the International Christian Youth Exchange, supported by several Protestant churches. Originally launched as a youth exchange program, the organization has developed into a network of member organizations in various countries that facilitate exchange programs to empower young people and strengthen collaboration with local communities. Over the decades, ICYE has adapted its programs to meet changing societal conditions while maintaining its core mission of promoting intercultural exchange, solidarity, peace, social justice and environmental regeneration. The non-governmental organization has been recognized by the United Nations as a peace-building organization since 1987. Vision and Mission ICYE envisions a world of diverse, engaged individuals and communities who can contribute to social justice, solidarity, peace and environmental sustainability. ICYE’s mission is to offer intercultural learning experiences to young people from diverse cultures and to enhance their social skills so they can contribute to a just, peaceful, and sustainable world. Goals include promoting intercultural dialogue, enhancing personal development, and supporting local communities through volunteer initiatives.
Programs and activities
[edit]ICYE offers a variety of programs, including long-term (6-12 months) and short-term (1-4 months) volunteer placements in areas such as education, environmental protection, human rights, and social development. Participants can choose the countries where they want to volunteer, gaining the opportunity to experience another culture while making a positive contribution to the local community. The organization also organizes workshops, seminars, and training to support volunteers during their journeys.
Organizational structure
[edit]ICYE operates as a Federation of National Committees, each responsible for coordinating local programs and activities. The International Office facilitates communication and collaboration between member organizations, ensuring a coherent approach to volunteer work and cultural exchange.[1]
