Idaho Falls Spud Kings

[edit]

The Idaho Falls Spud Kings.[1][2] are a junior ice hockey team affiliated with the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL)[3] based in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The team competes in the USPHL Tier II National Collegiate Development Conference[4] and plays their home games in the Mountain America Center[5].

History

[edit]

2022-23 was the inaugural season for the Spud Kings who competed in the USPHL Premier league. The next season the Spud Kings, along with the other teams in the Mountain Division, joined the more competitive NCDC division. While the team showed marked improvement from the first to second season (2023-24), both ended with elimination in the playoffs. At the conclusion of the 2024-25 regular season, the Spud Kings achieved a massive leap in success by finishing the regular in first place of the Mountain Division securing home ice advantage in the playoffs. The Pueblo Bulls were met in the first round of playoffs and the Spud Kings won the series in game five of five. The Spud Kings went on to play the defending Mountain Division champions Ogden Mustangs[6] and prevailed in the series in game four of five, securing the Mountain Division title.[7] With the win against the Mustangs, the Spud Kings earned a berth in the Dineen Cup Championship tournament. The Spud Kings went on to win the championship in a three-game sweep, playing the Mercer Chiefs[8] (game two) and the defending Dineen Cup Champion South Shore Kings[9] twice (games one and three).[10] Spud Kings goalie, Charlie Durkin, was voted 2024-25 Mountain Division Most Valuable Player and Goaltender of the Year.[11]

In January 2025, it was announced the Mountain America Center would host the 2025-2026 Dineen Cup Championship Tournament[12] and the Spud Kings would receive an autobid in the tournament[13]
