Ira James Kohath Wells (July 1, 1898-December 26, 1997) was a teacher, school principal, official in charge of schools for African Americans, and a newspaper proprietor.[1]

He was born in Tamo, Arkansas. William James Wells and Emma Brown Wells were his parents. He lost part of a leg in a train hopping accident.[1]

He graduated from Branch Normal College in Pine Bluff, now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.[1]

He and his wife Edna Clouden Wells had two children, Anita Edna Wells and Ira Wells Jr.[1]

Ira James Kohath Wells, an educator who served as West Virginia's first State Supervisor of Negro Education from 1933 to 1952, was born in Tamo. He also established Color Magazine.[2]
