== Headings ==, I'm Not Done Yet (INDY)
I'm Not Done Yet (commonly abbreviated as INDY) is a UK-based peer support initiative for people aged 50 to 70. Founded by Andrew Middleton, INDY encourages what he calls “soft retirement”—a gradual transition from full-time work into new, fulfilling roles rather than a clean break into traditional retirement.[1]
== Headings ==, Overview
INDY serves those approaching or entering the later stages of their careers, offering support and encouragement as they rethink aging and purpose. Its core message is that life post‑50 can be one of growth, engagement, and personal contribution, countering stereotypes of decline and disengagement.[1]
== Headings ==, Founder
INDY was created by Andrew Middleton, a portfolio worker and former corporate executive. At age 60, faced with age-driven career setbacks, he felt discarded by the system—“people didn’t want older senior managers.” In response, he launched INDY, initially as a network of around 100 people in their 50s to 70s exploring alternatives to full retirement.[1]
Middleton—at 65—juggles consulting, mentoring, wedding officiation, and film extra work. He plans to continue working into his 80s. His motto: “Have fun. Earn income. Do good.”[2]
== Headings ==, Philosophy: “Soft Retirement”
Instead of conventional retirement, INDY advocates a gradual transition to more flexible, personally meaningful work. The idea reflects a broader social trend: older adults are increasingly choosing to stay engaged in work for financial security, intellectual stimulation, and purpose.[2]
Middleton coined the term soft retirement to describe this model, where people scale back from high-powered roles into diverse and enjoyable opportunities—including writing, hosting travellers, starting new businesses, or pursuing volunteer work.[1]
== Headings ==, Advocacy Against Ageism
INDY also challenges entrenched ageism in the workplace. Middleton observed this firsthand during his corporate career when opportunities dried up despite his experience.[1]
Wider research supports this concern. According to Saga Magazine, millions of people in the UK have experienced ageism in various settings, including employment.[3]
== Headings ==, Media & Outreach INDY has been profiled in The Telegraph[1] and Business Insider.[2]
It hosts a podcast titled I'm Not Done Yet on platforms such as Apple Podcasts.[4]
The official website, imnotdoneyet.co.uk, offers resources and community engagement.[5]
