Himesh Patel (born 13 October 1990) is a British actor and singer. He is best known for his roles in the BBC soap opera EastEnders (2007–2016), the musical film Yesterday (2019), and the Netflix miniseries Station Eleven (2021–2022). Patel also appeared in the ensemble cast of the Netflix satire Don't Look Up (2021).

Early life

Patel was born in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, England, to Indian Gujarati parents.[1] He grew up in the nearby village of Sawtry and attended Prince William School in Oundle.[2]

Career

Early work and EastEnders

Patel joined the cast of EastEnders in 2007 as Tamwar Masood, a role he portrayed for nine years until his departure in 2016. During his time on the series, he received positive reviews for his portrayal of the character's development.[3]

Transition to film and international recognition

In 2019, Patel starred in the musical romantic comedy film Yesterday, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis. The film follows the story of a struggling musician who discovers that he is the only person who remembers The Beatles.[4] Patel performed many of the Beatles songs featured in the film and received critical praise for his performance.[5]

Patel subsequently appeared in Christopher Nolan's film Tenet (2020) in a supporting role.[6] In 2021, he was part of the ensemble cast in the Netflix film Don't Look Up, directed by Adam McKay.[7]

Station Eleven

Patel starred as Jeevan Chaudhary in the post-apocalyptic drama miniseries Station Eleven (2021–2022), based on the novel by Emily St. John Mandel. His performance received critical acclaim.[8]

Personal life

Patel has stated in interviews that he began acting and singing at a young age and grew up with a love of British sitcoms and films.[9]
