Draft:Heavy Woollen Cup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Heavy Woollen District Challenge Cup is a club cricket competition, based in West, South and North Yorkshire.

Historically centred around the Heavy Woollen District of West Yorkshire, the competition now extends to areas all over Yorkshire, including York, Harrogate and Barnsley. First competed for in 1883, it is considered to be the oldest club cricket competition in England.

Traditionally the grounds for entry were that the club had to be within an 18 mile radius of Batley Town Hall, this has since been relaxed. Currently the competition involves 32 clubs.[1] The current holders are Wakefield Thornes.[2]

The competition operates on a single knock-out basis. What makes this competition unique is that it involves clubs from different leagues, so unusual matchups can occur, as a result has been described by some as being an "FA cup of West Yorkshire Cricket".[3]

There is also a similar cup for second elevens who have entered in to the Heavy Woollen cup called the Crowther Cup, this is also organised by the Heavy Woollen Cup committee.
