[more in obit]
The election of Haslett P. Burke to the Supreme Court of Colorado (U.S.A.) proves that no man who stands by his conscience suffers for it. Judge Burke a few years ago, when an anti-Catholic jury returned a verdict against a Catholic clergyman in : a case where the evidence clearly showed his innocence, threw out the verdict. A movement to recall Judge Burke began, but the petition could not get enough signatures, and some who signed it repudiated their signatures, as they had been misled regarding the movement. Judge Burke is a Protestant.[2]
In July 1918, Burke and John H. Denison were unanimously nominated by the Colorado Republican Party to contest two vacant seats on the Colorado Supreme Court.[3]
