Héctor Martín Martínez (born 16 August 1973) is a Uruguayan football referee who has officiated in the Uruguayan Primera División and in international competitions. He became a FIFA-listed referee in 2010 and is known for refereeing high-profile domestic and regional matches.
Early life and beginnings
[edit]Martínez was born in Ecilda Paullier, a town in the San José Department of Uruguay. In 1993, he began his refereeing career in local leagues. In 1997, he moved to Montevideo to pursue professional training and began officiating in youth leagues such as Liga Palermo and competitions organized by the Organización del Fútbol del Interior (OFI).[1]
Domestic career
[edit]Martínez made his debut in Uruguay's top division, the Primera División, on 18 February 2007. Over time, he became one of the country's most experienced referees. In 2010, he was assigned to officiate the Uruguayan Clásico between Nacional and Peñarol for the championship final of the 2009–10 season — a significant milestone in his career.[1][2]
In 2018, Martínez’s appointment as the fourth official for a Uruguayan Clásico between Nacional and Peñarol drew public criticism from Nacional. The club expressed concern due to his prior involvement in the 2010 championship final between the same teams, which had been contentious. The controversy was reported by Montevideo Portal, highlighting lingering dissatisfaction with his role in that decisive 2010 match.[3]
International career
[edit]In 2010, Martínez was added to the FIFA International Referees List, which allowed him to officiate internationally. He remained FIFA-listed until 2012.[4][5] During this period, he was assigned to matches in Copa Sudamericana and other international tournaments. His professional path includes dozens of matches across league and cup competitions documented in statistical databases.[4][5]
