Gunung Jati University (formerly Swadaya Gunung Jati University) is one of the private universities located in Cirebon City, West Java, Indonesia. It was established on 16 January 1961 which was originally a foundation based on community initiative to build a higher education institution.[1]

In assisting the role of the government, the Gunung Jati Swadaya Education Foundation was built which became the forerunner of a University known as UGJ.

The name of this university was inspired by the name of one of the figures who spread Islam on the island of Java, Sunan Gunung Jati, who was buried in Cirebon, precisely in Gunung Jati, Cirebon Regency.[2]

History

[edit]

Swadaya Gunung Jati University: The Light of Knowledge from the Land of Cirebon

[edit]

In the heart of Cirebon, under the shady sky of Sunyaragi, stands an institution of knowledge that carries the great name of a religious propagator-Sunan Gunung Jati. Universitas Swadaya Gunung Jati exists as a form of devotion, lighting the torch of education to build empowered and knowledgeable human beings.

Established on 16 January 1961, the university was born from a hope: to provide a space for the sons and daughters of Cirebon to continue their education without having to go far to big cities. In its early days, lecture theatres were moved from one place to another, until finally in 1967, the university settled in the former Garuda High School building. At that time, the first two faculties-Law and Economics-became the milestones of its long journey.

Over time, the university grew and developed. In 1979, IKIP PGRI Ciwaringin was merged under its auspices and transformed into the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP). This was followed by the establishment of three new faculties: Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Engineering (FT), and Agriculture (FP). The year 2001 witnessed the birth of two postgraduate programmes, Master of Agricultural Science and Master of Administrative Science, opening wider horizons for knowledge seekers.

In 2004, Universitas Swadaya Gunung Jati further strengthened its work by establishing the Communication Science Study Programme. A year later, the Postgraduate Programme in Law was born, focusing on Business Law and Regiona Autonomy. Then, in 2008, the university went a step further by establishing the Faculty of Medicine - an important milestone in dedication to the world of health.

Step by step, the university's foundation is getting stronger. In 2014, a new building stood majestically on the main campus, completing its journey in producing a superior generation. The Tunas Gunung Jati Building on Campus IV also serves as the home of knowledge for the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education.[1]

A Trail of Achievement and Pride

[edit]

In the academic world, Swadaya Gunung Jati University has made a name for itself. In 2020, the university was ranked 15th in West Java by[Unirank and 119th in the Ministry of Education and Culture's list of best universities. These achievements are not just numbers, but a reflection of the dedication of teaching staff and students who continue to hone themselves.

Their students not only make achievements domestically, but also on the international stage. Scholarships at Mahidol University, student exchange opportunities, victories in national essay competitions, and triumphs in various sports-all are proof that the light of knowledge they bring not only shines on campus, but also illuminates the world.[3]
