The Gujjar Bakerwal Students Alliance (GBSA) is a student-led organisation that focuses on issues affecting Gujjar and Bakerwal tribal students in Jammu and Kashmir. It describes itself as a non-political platform aimed at promoting the welfare, educational advancement, and representation of tribal students. GBSA works to raise awareness about the challenges faced by these students and seeks to bring their concerns to the attention of relevant authorities. The organisation also aims to support students in pursuing academic success and participating more actively in the broader socio-political landscape of the region.

History

[edit]

The Gujjar Bakerwal community is one of the largest demographic groups in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. Various reports and studies have noted that members of the community encounter challenges related to socio-economic development, particularly in the area of education. These include access to quality education, availability of scholarships, hostel infrastructure, and representation in academic institutions. Until 2023, there was no formal student organization within the community that focused on these issues.

In 2023, a group of students and individuals from academic backgrounds initiated efforts to establish a platform for Gujjar and Bakerwal students. The objective was to create a space where student-related concerns could be discussed and addressed, with a particular focus on education, reservation policies, and awareness of academic opportunities.

This led to the formation of the Gujjar Bakerwal Students Alliance (GBSA) on 28 August 2023. The launch event was attended by students from different parts of Jammu & Kashmir. The group described its aim as promoting student engagement and advocating for issues affecting tribal students through organized channels.

Since its formation, GBSA has established local units in multiple districts, including Uri, Kishtwar, Jammu, and Reasi. These units have carried out activities such as awareness campaigns, engagement with educational institutions, and information sharing related to scholarships and academic programs.

GBSA continues to operate as a student-centered organization focused on education-related concerns within the Gujjar and Bakerwal communities in Jammu & Kashmir. Its activities are ongoing, with an emphasis on building networks among students and facilitating access to educational resources.
