Gerasimos Siasos

Gerasimos Siasos is a Greek Professor of Cardiology and the current Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, a position he has held since September 1st, 2023. He served as President of the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2021-2023). He was a Visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School (2015-2016), Vice President of the School of Medicine of the University of Athens (2019-2021), and President of the Board of Directors of ‘Aretaieio’ and ‘Aiginiteio’ University Hospitals (2019-2021). He is Director of the 3rd Clinical Department of Cardiology at the School of Medicine of the University of Athens (Athens General Hospital of Thoracic Diseases ‘Sotiria’).

Education and Career

Gerasimos Siasos was born in 1979 in Thessaloniki and studied Medicine at the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). He completed his residency in Cardiology at the 1st Department of Cardiology of the School of Medicine of NKUA. He holds an MSc degree from the NKUA’s Postgraduate Programme ‘Intensive Care Units - Cardiology, Care’ and an MSc degree from the Hellenic Open University’s Postgraduate Programme ‘Health Care Management’. He received his PhD degree from the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with the grade of ‘Excellent’.

He was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Cardiovascular Division, Boston, MA (2015-2016), and a research affiliate at Harvard-MIT Biomedical Engineering Center, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA (2015-2017). Since then, he has continued to work as a research affiliate of the Vascular Profiling Research Group at the same hospital (Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School).

Gerasimos Siasos served as President and Vice President of the School of Medicine of the University of Athens (2021-2023 and 2019-2021 respectively) and President of the Board of Directors of ‘Aretaieio’ and ‘Aiginiteio’ University Hospitals (2019-2021).

Since 2018, he has been directing the ‘Heart and Diabetes Unit’ at the 1st  Department of Cardiology at Ippokrateio General Hospital of Athens and the 3rd Clinical Department of Cardiology of the School of Medicine at Athens General Hospital of Thoracic Diseases ‘Sotiria’.  In 2017, he played an pivotal role in the setting up of the 3rd Department of Cardiology at Athens General Hospital of Thoracic Diseases ‘Sotiria’ in his capacity as Alternate Director.

He is the founder and former President of the ‘Heart and Diabetes’ working group at the Hellenic Society of Cardiology.

He is the current Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, a position he has held since September 1st, 2023.

Research

Gerasimos Siasos’s research focuses on molecular cardiology, diabetes mellitus, vascular profiling, and vascular function with an emphasis on the mechanisms of atherosclerosis progression.

His body of work consists of more than 430 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious international scientific journals, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the International Journal of Cardiology, and Current Medicinal Chemistry. He has served as Section Editor (Cardiovascular Diseases) for Current Medicinal Chemistry (Impact factor: 4.740). His research has appeared in journals with a total impact factor exceeding 2.000, while his published work he has received over 23,000 citations in the international literature (h-index 70). His scholarly output comprises, among other contributions, the editing and authorship of 20 books and textbooks on Cardiology.
