Frends is a European software company that provides an integration platform as a service (iPaaS), enabling automation, API management, and artificial intelligence (AI) orchestration across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. The platform supports low-code development and AI-augmented features designed to streamline enterprise integration processes.
Frends originated in Finland as part of HiQ Finland Oy, a subsidiary of HiQ International AB specializing in IT consulting. In 2024, Frends' iPaaS and integration business was formally demerged from HiQ Finland to operate as an independent company under Frends Technology.[1].
History
[edit]Frends was founded in 1988 in Finland by a group of engineers developing automation solutions for unmanned gas stations. Early use cases included fuel monitoring and cash collection automation using dial-up modem connectivity [2].
In 2005, the company shifted strategy by building its platform atop third-party technologies, which accelerated growth. By 2008, Frends was named Microsoft Solution Partner of the Year in Finland and recognized globally by Microsoft in the Business Process and Integration Solutions category [3]
Swedish IT consultancy HiQ acquired Frends in 2010, supporting its international expansion. In 2011, Frends introduced a German-language version of its platform and grew its revenue significantly. The platform evolved into a standalone integration platform as a service (iPaaS) by 2014, moving away from dependencies on Microsoft BizTalk.
In 2024, HiQ Finland Oy formally separated its business units, establishing Frends as an independent company focused solely on integration and iPaaS solutions. As of 2024, Frends serves over 6,000 customers across 16 countries[4]
Platform overview
[edit]Frends offers an integration platform as a service (iPaaS) that enables organizations to connect systems, automate workflows, and manage APIs across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments. The platform supports low-code development, allowing both technical and non-technical users to design integrations using a visual interface based on BPMN 2.0 (Business Process Model and Notation).
Key capabilities include API management, workflow orchestration, event-driven architecture, and real-time monitoring. Frends provides features such as an API Gateway, version control, secure audit trails, and deployment flexibility across distributed environments.
The platform includes AI-augmented tools for integration design, documentation, and execution, as well as support for governance and compliance in regulated industries. Frends integrates with systems such as Microsoft Dynamics 365, Salesforce, and various ERP, CRM, and data services.
Frends is currently used by public sector organizations, healthcare providers, utilities, and private enterprises across Europe.[5] [6]
