Fredrick Benneh Frimpong is a Ghanaian entrepreneur, social impact advocate, and founder of Farming in Africa, an agribusiness dedicated to sustainable livestock systems and youth empowerment. He gained international attention after co-founding Semanyiya American School and Farming in Africa, both of which have been featured by global platforms such as Semester at Sea, TEDxSanDiego, and GhanaWeb. He is also the co-founder of the GodFreds Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on education, health, and economic access in underserved Ghanaian communities. Frimpong’s story has been featured on international platforms, including a TEDxSanDiego talk by University of San Diego Dean Patricia Márquez, and various media outlets for his work in agriculture, community development, and cross-cultural education.
Early life and education
[edit]Fredrick Benneh Frimpong was raised in the Bono Region of Ghana in the small village of Senase. As a child, he walked several hours to attend school—an experience that inspired his lifelong dream of building a school in his hometown. That dream became a reality when he opened the Semanyiya American School, offering children in Senase local access to education.
Frimpong’s entrepreneurial journey began after he moved to Accra, where he founded a travel and tour company. This venture allowed him to connect with global travelers and led to a scholarship opportunity in Turkey. He studied at three universities in Turkey before continuing his education at Hult International Business School in London, and later at the University of San Diego.[1]
Frimpong earned his bachelor's degree in International Business from the London campus of Hult International Business School.
Career and impact
[edit]Frimpong began his career by founding the Semanyiya American School in his hometown of Senase, Ghana, to provide accessible, quality education to children in rural communities. The school was born from Frimpong’s own experience of walking hours each day to attend school and his dream of bringing education directly to underserved areas.
In 2015, while attending the University of San Diego, Frimpong entered and won the university’s prestigious Social Innovation Challenge (SIC).[2] The prize money from the competition served as the seed funding to co-found Semanyiya American School and launch local educational and social support programs.
Frimpong is also the co-founder of the GodFreds Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on youth empowerment, education, and health access in rural Ghana. The foundation facilitates cross-cultural programs, volunteer initiatives, and school development projects, including partnerships with international organizations such as Semester at Sea.[3]
In 2016, Frimpong returned to Ghana as part of the founding team that launched Uber Ghana, helping to establish the ride-sharing platform in Accra. In a video interview titled The Man Behind Uber Ghana and the Idea that Started it ALL, Frimpong recounted how he initially launched a transportation company with 20 cars in London before being recommended to Uber by a former classmate. He eventually paused his U.S. studies to return to Ghana and lead the company’s successful launch in Accra.[4]
Public speaking and advocacy
[edit]His life and work were highlighted in a 2025 episode of the Konnected Minds Podcast.[5], where he spoke in depth about returning to Ghana, building grassroots solutions to community challenges, and navigating the path between local impact and global engagement.[6]
In recognition of his work, Frimpong’s life story was also featured in a TEDxSanDiego talk titled Social Conscience in Action, delivered by Patricia Márquez, Dean of the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego. The talk spotlighted Frimpong’s role as a changemaker, emphasizing how education and vision can drive long-term transformation.[7]
Frimpong’s story and his ongoing collaboration with Semester at Sea were profiled by the organization, highlighting the long-term impact of a chance encounter between Frimpong and student travelers on the streets of Ghana.[8]
Farming in Africa: Agricultural innovation and impact
[edit]Frimpong began his agricultural work in 2018 with a vision to create a school farm that could support both commercial and private farmers. After conducting research across California and Mexico, he focused on livestock farming—specifically chickens, cattle, and goats—under a model farm called Semanhyia Farms.
In 2020, Fredrick Benneh Frimpong co-founded Farming in Africa, a social enterprise focused on transforming agriculture through education, youth empowerment, and innovation. The organization works with smallholder farmers across Ghana to increase productivity, adopt sustainable practices, and access markets. Through its programs, Farming in Africa has trained hundreds of farmers, launched demonstration farms, and collaborated with Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture to promote climate-smart farming.
Frimpong’s mission extends beyond farming as a livelihood—he sees agriculture as a platform for rural transformation. His approach emphasizes youth participation in agriculture, investment in livestock systems, and the use of storytelling to shift perceptions around farming.
In addition to field-based work, Frimpong is also the creator of Ghana’s most-viewed agriculture-focused YouTube channel, Farming in Africa. As of June 2025, the channel has over 78,000 subscribers. Through video storytelling, farm tours, training demonstrations, and community spotlights, the platform builds awareness around agricultural entrepreneurship and rural development across Africa and the diaspora.
Recognition and media coverage
[edit]Fredrick Benneh Frimpong's work and life story have been featured across various platforms highlighting grassroots leadership, innovation, and education in rural Ghana. While he has not personally delivered a TED Talk, his journey was the subject of a TEDxSanDiego presentation titled Social Conscience in Action, delivered by Patricia Márquez, then Dean of the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego.[9] The talk emphasized how Fredrick's early challenges inspired lasting change through the founding of Semanhyiya American School.
In a 2025 episode, Frimpong was a guest on the Konnected Minds Podcast, where he spoke about the urgent challenges facing Farming in Africa, including regulatory hurdles threatening to shut down what had become one of Ghana’s largest goat farms. The podcast episode, titled "Given 14 Days to Shut Down Biggest Goat Farm Business – FARMING IN AFRICA", explored not only the business side of his work but also his broader mission to empower rural communities through agricultural innovation.[10]
Frimpong was profiled by YEWGlobal as Entrepreneur of the Week in 2023,[11] and has been covered by GhanaWeb for his work in the livestock sector.[12]
