Fotis Zisimopoulos (born 11 December 1982) is a Greek ultramarathon runner, best known for his multiple victories and course record at the Spartathlon, a 246-kilometre ultramarathon from Athens to Sparta. He is considered one of the most dominant modern ultrarunners in Europe.

Early life

Zisimopoulos was born in Agrinio, Greece. He works as a police officer and began running competitively in adulthood. His scientific approach to training and racing has been noted in various interviews.[1]

Spartathlon

The Spartathlon retraces the legendary route of Pheidippides. Zisimopoulos first won the event in 2021 and went on to win it four times consecutively.

  • 2021: 1st place – 21:57:36[2]
  • 2022: 1st place – 21:00:59
  • 2023: 1st place – 19:55:09 (New course record)[3][4]
  • 2024: 1st place – 20:18:43[5]

His 2023 time broke Yiannis Kouros’s legendary 1984 record and earned him a Guinness World Record for the fastest Spartathlon finish by a male runner.[6]

International competitions

Aside from Spartathlon, Zisimopoulos has competed in numerous trail and road ultramarathons:

  • IAU 24-Hour World Championships 2023 (Taipei): 2nd place – 292.254 km[7]
  • Ultra-Trail Cape Town 100M 2022: 1st place – 20:48:17[8]
  • European Off-Road Championships 2024: 14th place, trail
  • Zagori Mountain Running and UTMB races in Europe[9]

Style and impact

Known for his calm demeanor and data-driven preparation, Zisimopoulos has been featured in international running media. He is a popular figure among Greek runners and was named an ambassador for the “Young Heroes” learning program in 2023.[10]
