Foster Hill
[edit]Foster Hill is a Canadian author and criminology student at Wilfrid Laurier University. He is best known for his debut novel, The Ballad of the Knight Terror, a psychological crime thriller that explores themes such as mental health, morality, identity, and the supernatural. Hill’s unique perspective as a criminology student and his personal experience with mental health heavily influence his writing.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Hill is currently studying Criminology at Wilfrid Laurier University. From a young age, he was inspired by superheroes and had aspirations of helping others. Following a car accident and a period of mental health struggles, he created the character Knight Terror, which became the basis for his first novel.
Career
[edit]The Ballad of the Knight Terror
[edit]Originally shared on Instagram and later refined for publication, The Ballad of the Knight Terror is Hill's debut novel. It was written during a period of existential despair and served as an emotional and creative outlet. The story’s protagonist, Oscar, reflects Hill’s desire to embody the ideals of a hero, while wrestling with internal struggles and supernatural threats.
The novel explores the duality of heroism and mental illness, as well as the moral gray areas of being a “hero.” Hill noted that he wanted to present mental illness authentically, without romanticizing or simplifying it.[1]
Oscar’s antagonists, the Plainsights, are inspired by secret societies such as the Illuminati. They represent not only societal control but also the internal demons the protagonist faces.[2]
Writing Style and Influences
[edit]Hill's writing is described as straightforward yet introspective, blending realism with philosophical depth. His themes often include:
- Existential crisis and mental health
- Power, identity, and heroism
- Love and personal relationships
- Fear and courage
- Supernatural forces
- Moral ambiguity
He cites philosophers like Voltaire and Albert Camus as key influences, especially in their exploration of life’s meaning. Music also plays a major role in his process, influencing the emotional rhythm of the novel—hence the title’s use of the word “ballad.”
Writing Process
[edit]Hill did not follow a formal outlining process. He described his method as spontaneous and emotionally driven, letting the story unfold as he wrote.[3]
Personal Life
[edit]Hill includes personal touches in his writing, such as the character of a cat inspired by his own pet, Fatness. He has expressed excitement about his growth as a writer and is currently working on a sequel to The Ballad of the Knight Terror.
