Foster is an upcoming animated musical adventure fantasy comedy film directed by Karen Disher and Steve Martino, and screenplay by Tim Federle and Doug Langdale. The film is being produced by Frenzy Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

On February 12, 2018, it was announced that Karen Disher and Steve Martino will co-direct a animated fantasy musical for Blue Sky Studios under the working title Foster with Tim Federle writing the script and Bruce Anderson, Gillian Carr, Marc Platt, and Lori Forte producing the film.

Cancellation and aftermath

On February 9, 2021, Disney announced it was closing down Blue Sky Studios, and that production of the film was cancelled.

Revival by Paramount Pictures and Frenzy Animation

On June 5, 2025, it was announced that Disher and Martino would revive Foster for Frenzy Animation was announced as the project's animation partner was hired to replace him as director. John Lasseter were set to produce. Ihe film's official announcement in September 2025, after being dormant for decades, and that it would be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Music

On February 12, 2018, Ben Pasek and Justin Paul will write the songs for Foster. On October 16, 2020, John Powell and Marc Shaiman will compose the film score. In June 2025, Christophe Beck was announced as the film's composer, Karen Disher revealed that Christophe Beck had composed the score for the film.

Animation

Animation was provided by Frenzy Animation (formerly Vanguard Animation) and was also made in Houston and Texas. Portions of production were done remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Release

On February 12, 2018, Foster was set for release on March 5, 2021. On October 16, 2020, the release date was moved to August 17, 2021. The film was pulled from Disney's release schedule and canceled after the closure of Blue Sky Studios on April 10, 2021. It was revived by Frenzy Animation with Paramount Pictures handling the distribution and was scheduled for a summer 2026 release.
