Flowers Hospital is a 235-bed regional medical center located in Dothan, Alabama, United States. Founded in 1950 by Dr. Paul R. Flowers, the hospital has grown from a small 12-bed clinic to one of the largest private hospitals in the Wiregrass region, serving southeastern Alabama, southwestern Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle.
History
[edit]Flowers Hospital was established in 1950 by Dr. Paul R. Flowers, a Dothan native and general surgeon. Originally a 12-bed facility, the hospital was founded on the principle of delivering high-quality, compassionate care to the local community. Dr. Flowers initially managed multiple roles in the hospital, including administration and surgical duties. Over time, the hospital expanded its facilities and services to meet the growing needs of the region. In the 1970s, it introduced the first cardiac catheterization laboratory in Dothan.[1]
Facilities and Services
[edit]Flowers Hospital provides a wide array of healthcare services, including:
- Emergency and trauma care
- Inpatient and outpatient surgery
- Cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation
- Diagnostic imaging, including MRI, CT, PET/CT, and 3D mammography
- Maternity and women’s health services
- Neurology and stroke care
- Orthopedics and sports medicine
- Physical, occupational, and speech therapy
The hospital is equipped with advanced medical technology, including robotic-assisted surgical systems, and operates accredited centers for cardiac and stroke care.[2]
Graduate Medical Education
[edit]In 2024, Flowers Hospital launched an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program. The program is designed to provide comprehensive training in general internal medicine, with structured rotations across inpatient, outpatient, and subspecialty settings. It aims to prepare residents for independent practice or further fellowship training through a curriculum that includes clinical experience, didactics, and quality improvement initiatives.[3]
Community Impact
[edit]Flowers Hospital is one of the largest employers in Dothan and contributes significantly to the local economy. In 2022, the hospital recorded over 300,000 patient encounters, including more than 15,000 inpatient admissions and approximately 40,700 emergency department visits.[4] The same year, the hospital reported over $134 million in charity and uncompensated care.[4]
In addition to healthcare services, the hospital partners with educational institutions to support healthcare workforce development. It collaborates with Jersey College of Nursing to offer a practical nursing program and with Troy University on a paid nurse apprenticeship program.[4]
