The Financial Counseling Association of America (FCAA) is a national, non-profit financial counseling organization with more than three decades of service in the United States.[1] Registered as The Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies, the organization does business as the FCAA.[2] Its members are credit counseling agencies (CCAs) that provide credit counseling and financial counseling services to help consumers understand their finances and explore ways to get out of debt.[1]

The FCAA is led by Executive Director Lori Pollack and a Board of Directors comprised of elected members.[3]

Services

[edit]

FCAA members serve consumers in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. The organization sets industry standards and consumer protection guidelines, advocates for its members and consumers, works for equity and fair interaction between creditors and the credit counseling industry, and champions consumer financial education.[1]

FCAA member agencies provide free or low-cost financial counseling in the following areas:

Consumers contact the FCAA to obtain help with repaying debts, overcoming credit card debt, budgeting, student loans, housing finances, bankruptcy and other financial concerns. The FCAA connects consumers with a member agency that can help address their needs.[1]

All FCAA members are vetted to ensure they are legitimate, licensed organizations. Members must adhere to the organization’s standards and best practices and provide proof of accreditation, counselor certification, license and registration documentation.[4]

With U.S. credit counseling agencies, the initial counseling session is typically free of charge. If the consumer enrolls in a debt management plan, nominal monthly fees are charged.[5]

Standards

[edit]

Every FCAA member agency must:

  • Adhere to a high standard of professional conduct
  • Meet all applicable statutory requirements in the states where business is conducted
  • Be accredited by an approved third-party accreditation provider
  • Require credit counselor certification of all counselors from an approved program
  • Deliver services with integrity, fairness and professionalism without discrimination[4]
