Faelris is a Canadian metal band founded in 2021 by musician Jean-Raphaël Couillard in Saguenay. Originally conceived as a one-manproject, Faelris blends elements of melodic death metal, doom, gothic, symphonic, black, and folk metal in a epic and dark craft driven by experimentation and atmosphere..[1] . In 2025, Faelris expanded into a full three-member live band.[2]

History

[edit]

Formation and early work (2021–2022)

[edit]

Faelris was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic by Jean-Raphaël Couillard. The name is a fusion of his own name with faerie and Fenris, the Norse wolf god,[3] reflecting the project’s deep roots in fantasy and myths. The debut album, The Circle of Iron, was released in 2021.[4]

The Black Book of Sorrow and band expansion (2023–2025)

[edit]

In 2024, Faelris released its second album,The Black Book of Sorrow[5], introducing a darker, more gothic aesthetic. The album emphasized mournful, romantic, sad, bitter and nihilistic lyrical themes[6]. The next year, Faelris annouced the new band line-up with Mat Gaut and Jean-Raphael Couillard on the guitars and Simon-Pierre Tremblay on the drum.[7]

Remasters and future direction (2025–present)

[edit]

This is the year where the Circle of Iron 2.0 and The Black Book of Sorrow 2.0 got released.[8] As of now, according to a publication of the artist, we know that Faelris members might be preparing to do live shows and are currently working on a conceptual album which aims to musically depict history.[9]

Musical style and influences

[edit]

Faelris’s style combines elements of doom, folk, gothic, melodic death, and symphonic metal[10], but have also been called progessive metal on the release of their first album.[11] According to an interview with Jean-Raphaël Couillard by Aldora Britain Records that got published on Facebook, the band got influences from bands like Wintersun and Ensiferum and draw some inspiration from atmospheric black metal.[12]
