Fabio Corbisiero (Naples, 1971) is an Italian sociologist and full professor of Environmental and Territorial Sociology at the University of Naples Federico II. His research focuses on urban sociology, tourism, gender studies, and LGBTQIA+ issues.

Biography

[edit]

Corbisiero holds a PhD from the University of Naples Federico II, where he currently teaches. He has served as a visiting professor and fellow at various international universities, including the City University of New York (2008–2010), KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (2012), University College Dublin (2013), Université Moulay Ismaïl in Meknès (2014–2017), and the State University of New York (2022). He has also taught at Sapienza University of Rome.

He was awarded a Marie Curie Grant, which funded his research project (2013–2017) on territorial and gender inequalities between the medina and the ville nouvelle in Morocco’s imperial cities, in collaboration with the University of Bologna and the Université Moulay Ismaïl.

He is the scientific director of the OUT – University Observatory on Tourism and the LGBT+ Observatory at the University of Naples Federico II. He also coordinates the international ScOUT School, a methodology-focused research program on inclusive and sustainable tourism.

Scientific contributions

[edit]

Corbisiero has developed a sociological theory of tourism centered on the idea of tourism as a social device – a transformative force that reshapes territories, identities, and social inclusion dynamics. His work emphasizes social sustainability, spatial justice, and the inclusion of marginalized identities in tourism and urban planning.

He is also known for his concept of the “Rainbow City,” which investigates how LGBTQIA+ movements and visibility reshape urban space through symbolic and practical transformations.

Theories and methodology

[edit]

His theoretical framework criticizes extractive models of tourism and instead promotes inclusive and participatory practices. Methodologically, Corbisiero advocates for a socio-territorial approach, combining qualitative methods (interviews, urban ethnography), visual and cartographic tools (perceptual maps, participatory GIS), and community-based research. This framework is applied in the ScOUT School and in research conducted by the OUT observatory.

Publications

[edit]

He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles in national and international journals. He is the founding editor-in-chief of Fuori Luogo. Journal of Sociology of Territory, Tourism, Technology, published by Fedoa University Press.
