Ethan Guo (born 2005)[1] is an American pilot and social media influencer, best known for his attempt to fly to all seven continents solo as a teenager, while raising donations through the internet for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
In June 2025[2], Guo was detained by Chilean authorities for "providing false information to the aeronautical authority" in reference to an unauthorized landing at Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Airport in the Chilean Antarctic Territory.[3]
Personal life
[edit]Guo was born in Tianjin, China, sometime in the latter half of 2005. Guo lives in West Palm Beach, Florida.[1] In 2021, Guo's cousin developed stage 4 blood cancer. Guo has stated that his cousin's diagnosis inspired him to start his fundraiser.[4]
Aviation career
[edit]Guo became interested in aviation at the age of 13 and earned his private pilot's license and became IFR-certified at 17.[4]
Guo began his campaign to fly solo to all seven continents. On May 31, 2024, Guo departed from Memphis, Tennessee in his a 50-year-old Cessna 182 aircraft.[5] The journey was planned to last for 100 days and cover roughly 80,000 kilometers in total.[6] Guo's Instagram account documenting his journey amassed over one million followers.[7]
In September 2024, Guo was welcomed by the Seletar Flying Club based in Seletar Airport in Singapore following his landing there.[8]
Unauthorized landings and detainment
[edit]In May 2025, Guo was planned to fly from Kolkata, India to Thailand. Dangerous weather conditions forced Guo to divert to Mandalay, Myanmar[9] where he landed without authorization.[10] Guo was detained and questioned by authorities, but was let go without any charges the next day.[11]
On June 27, 2025, Guo flew from the Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport in Punta Arenas, Chile, to the Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Airport in the Chilean Antarctic Territory. This flight did not follow the flight plan Guo had submitted to the Chilean authorities. As a result, Guo was detained and formally charged as soon as he landed in Antarctica.[12] Regional Prosecutor of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Cristian Crisosto Rifo formally accused Guo of violating the aeronautical code, as well as "multiple national and international regulations regarding routes to Antarctica."[13] Guo's lawyer, Karina Ulloa, stated that Guo was "experiencing complications" and "conducting an exploratory flight."[14] Chile has not invoked sovereignty claims nor requested extradition from the United States, instead handling Guo’s case through its domestic judicial system.[15] The Chilean court decreed a 90-day investigation period for this case, during which time Guo must remain in Chile.[12][16]
