Erewash Musical Society (EMS) is an amateur musical theatre company based in Derbyshire, England. Founded in 1895, the society stages full-scale musical productions in the East Midlands, primarily at the Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton. EMS is affiliated with the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA)[1][2] and is known for producing both classic and contemporary musicals, as well as maintaining an active youth section.

History

[edit]

Erewash Musical Society was established in 1895, originally under a different name. Over more than a century, it has evolved into one of Derbyshire’s longest-running amateur theatre groups. The society began with operatic performances and gradually expanded its repertoire to include major West End and Broadway musicals. Today, EMS presents multiple productions each year and regularly participates in regional arts festivals and events.

The society operates as a not-for-profit, reinvesting any surplus into future productions and youth development.

Productions

[edit]

EMS has staged a wide range of musicals, including:

  • Evita[3]
  • Sunset Boulevard[4]
  • Calendar Girls The Musical
  • Hot Mikado[5]
  • Funny Girl
  • Bad Girls The Musical

The society’s work has received regional recognition and critical acclaim. For example, Sunset Boulevard was described as "visually and vocally compelling" by East Midlands Theatre[4], and Evita was the subject of an in-depth interview with Everything Theatre[3], highlighting the creative team’s vision and execution.

Youth Group

[edit]

EMS also runs a youth division—EMS Youth Group—which offers young performers training and stage experience. Past productions have included Footloose The Musical, Camp Rock, and The Little Mermaid Jr. The youth section was nominated for a NODA East Midlands Award in 2023 for its performance of Footloose.[6]

Recognition and Affiliations

[edit]

EMS has received multiple nominations and accolades from NODA[7][6][8], and its productions are regularly reviewed by independent critics. The society maintains close ties with the local community and often features in regional broadcasts and interviews, including segments on Erewash Sound[5] and Nottingham Hospitals Radio.

Venues

[edit]

Most EMS productions are staged at the Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton. The society also collaborates with other local venues for rehearsals, workshops, and community outreach.
