The Embassy of Pakistan in Ankara is the diplomatic mission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Republic of Turkey. Located in the Çankaya District of Ankara, the embassy is responsible for managing diplomatic relations, political dialogue, economic cooperation, and consular services between Pakistan and Turkey. It also serves as Pakistan’s non-resident mission to the Republic of Kosovo.

Pakistan also maintains a Consulate-General in Istanbul, which provides consular services, trade facilitation, and community outreach for Pakistanis living in Istanbul and the surrounding provinces.[1]

History

[edit]

Diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Turkey were formally established in 1947, soon after the independence of Pakistan. Recognizing the historical and cultural affinity between the two nations, Pakistan established its embassy in Ankara shortly thereafter. Over the decades, the embassy has been central to fostering strong bilateral cooperation in areas such as defence, education, trade, health, and humanitarian assistance. The embassy has hosted numerous official visits by heads of state and government, including state visits by presidents and prime ministers of both countries.[2] It has also facilitated the military cooperation, cultural exchanges, and support during natural disasters, such as Pakistan’s aid during the 2023 Türkiye–Syria earthquake.[3][4][5][6]

In 2012, Pakistan formally recognized the independence of the Republic of Kosovo, and the Embassy of Pakistan in Ankara was designated as the non-resident diplomatic mission to Kosovo.[7] The embassy continues to represent Pakistan in Kosovo through political engagement, multilateral forums, and limited consular coverage, despite there being no resident Pakistani embassy in Pristina, the country's capital and largest city.[8][9]

The embassy has also played an active role in engaging the Pakistani diaspora, organizing events on Pakistan’s Independence Day, Defence Day, Kashmir Solidarity Day, Youm-e-Tashakur and other national commemorations.[10] In recent years, the embassy has expanded digital services and consular outreach, including online appointment systems and mobile consular camps in distant Turkish cities.[11][12]

In 2025, during the India–Pakistan conflict, Turkey expressed diplomatic support for Pakistan, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan offering condolences and calling for de-escalation, reaffirming the strength of bilateral ties.[13][14]

Consulate-General in Istanbul

[edit]

Pakistan operates a Consulate-General in Istanbul, which functions as an extension of the Embassy of Pakistan in Ankara. Located in Turkey’s largest city, the consulate is responsible for providing consular services, promoting trade and investment, and engaging with the Pakistani community in Istanbul and surrounding provinces.[15][1]

The consulate facilitates the issuance and renewal of passports, processing of visas, attestation of documents, and delivery of other civil and legal services. It also offers assistance to Pakistani nationals residing in or visiting the region, including support in emergency situations.[16]
