Emad Kiyaei is an Iranian-South African author, lecturer, activist, storyteller, educator, and researcher based in France. As an expert in disarmament of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East and advocate for creating a zone free of weapons of mass destruction (WMDFZ), Emad has advised national governments and multilateral diplomatic organisations on strategies to promote a regional approach to nonproliferation in the Middle East (including 22 Arab states as well as Iran and Israel) since 2010.[1] He is cofounder and director of the Middle East Treaty Organization (METO) and AiXist.
In addition to publishing widely in academic and mainstream press, Emad has made numerous media and film appearances. In "Bye-Bye New York," his The Moth 2018 GrandSLAM storytelling winner, he tells his story of youthful, optimistic immigration to America and abrupt emigration 16 years later during the Trump Presidency.[2]
Early life and upbringing
[edit]
Emad was born in Tehran, Iran, and grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and Cape Town, South Africa. He attended Stony Brook University, New York, and completed graduate study at Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs in New York City.
Career
[edit]Emad began his career at Columbia University’s Center for International Conflict Resolution (in the Institute of War and Peace Studies) working on diplomatic and civil society approaches to peacebuilding, in particular running programs for humanitarian aid to Gaza.[3] He subsequently joined Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security (SGS) at the School of Public and International Affairs as a researcher.[4]
Emad served as the executive director of the American Iranian Council (AIC), a nonprofit organization that focuses on US-Iran relations.[5] Several United Nations Security Council members drew on his expertise during the negotiations (2013-2016) on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (Iran nuclear deal). While living in New York he was appointed Linowitz Professor of International Affairs at Hamilton College and lectured at Marymount Manhattan College.[6]
In 2023, he cofounded AiXist, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to bring together private and state actors and civil society to produce a global agreement on the use of artificial intelligence technology in weapons systems.[7] The organisation focuses on creating oversight for the risks of integrating artificial intelligence in systems used to design, build, maintain and deploy weapons of mass destruction.
As a researcher and advocate, he has co-authored two books, 15 academic articles and dozens of shorter pieces on the geopolitics of the Middle East for general audiences.[8] He moved to Paris, France during the first Trump administration.
Emad continues to lecture on the Middle East, security and disarmament issues, and their interface with the evolving technology of artificial intelligence.

The book addresses many of the critical issues that motivated the United Nations Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction in November 2019 ... suggests that the key factors [for failure to create a WMDFZ] include the lack of political will from regional states and world powers and disputes over the conditions under which a zone could be considered.
