eBesa is a mobile money transfer service operating in Somalia. Launched in 2022 as a subsidiary of IBS Bank, an Islamic financial institution headquartered in Mogadishu, eBesa offers digital financial services including peer-to-peer transfers, merchant payments, airtime purchases, international remittances, and virtual card issuance.[1]
eBesa is licensed by the Central Bank of Somalia to operate mobile money services and is powered by SomLink Telecom.[2] According to Somalia’s Mobile Money Regulations (2020), only telecom operators holding a valid license from the National Communications Authority are eligible for authorization by the central bank.[3] On 6 March 2022, SomLink became the third mobile money service provider to receive a license from the CBS, joining Hormuud Telecom and others.[4]
The platform enables users to deposit and transfer funds via mobile phones using USSD codes (*770#), QR payments, and virtual Mastercards. It supports cash withdrawals through bank branches and agents, along with utility bill payments, salary disbursement, airtime top-ups, and group savings plans.[5] eBesa is listed among licensed mobile money providers on the Central Bank's official website.
