Dunster House Ltd is a family-owned British manufacturer and retailer of timber garden buildings. Established in 1994 by Christopher and Pamela Murphy, the company designs and distributes a wide range of products in the garden structure space. Dunster House operates its own manufacturing facilities in Europe and has distribution depots across the United Kingdom, maintaining vertical integration across design, production and delivery. It remains a family-run business, with Alexander Murphy serving as managing director.
As of 2025, Dunster House has over 250 UK employees and 13 - 14 depots in Britain, as well factories across Europe. They employ an addition 120 staff in the branch operations in Estonia, Hungary, and Poland.
History
Dunster House Ltd was founded in 1994 by Christopher Murphy and his wife Pamela, initially operating as a manufacturer of uPVC windows and doors in Northampton, England[1]. They were soon joined by their sons, Alexander and Andrew Murphy, later joined the firm, working on factory floors during their teens. Alex Murphy started at age 18 managing his own factory, gaining firsthand insight into production.
Over the early 2000s, Dunster House expanded operations beyond uPVC windows into the garden building sector. This diversification led to them developing new garden-building products annually, with a range covering log cabins, garden offices, sheds, climbing frames and gazebos. The Windows and Doors element of the business would become its own website[2] to continue the business under a new brand.
By the mid-2010s, the business had established a vertically integrated manufacturing and distribution system. Their substantial growth led to the purchase of multiple new sites, across the UK and Europe supported by its own delivery fleet for kerbside delivery. Its supply chain emphasizes slow‑grown spruce, sustainably sourced timber, and pressure treatment. In 2022, Dunster House were featured on the BBC program DIY SOS: The Big Build with a log cabin donated to a local family in Kettering[3].
In 2025, Christopher Murphy was awarded an MBE[4] they experienced significant growth once more and acquired three new distribution centres in Dudley[5], Stockton-on-Tees[6] and Spalding.
Charity work
In 2009, Dunster House opened the humanitarian side of the business which - In the late 2010s, the company also broadened its humanitarian impact: a dedicated international humanitarian division manufactures sanitation products such as raised latrines and latrine superstructures for NGOs including Oxfam and UNICEF[7].
They have additionally been bestowed local awards for their work supporting the British armed forces, including the Silver Award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme[8].
