Dr. V. G. Mohan Prasad (born 1958) is an Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and medical educator based in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He is the founder and chairman of VGM Gastro Centre, a NABH-accredited single-specialty hospital focused on gastrointestinal and liver care.[1] He is also known for his public health initiatives, medical device innovation, and philanthropic activities in Tamil Nadu and beyond.

Early life and education

Dr. Mohan Prasad was born in 1958 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and raised in Udumalpet. He completed his M.B.B.S. from Coimbatore Medical College, followed by an M.D. in General Medicine and a D.M. in Gastroenterology. He is a Fellow of several prestigious institutions including:

  • FICP

Career

Dr. Prasad began his clinical career in the early 1980s and later established the VGM Gastro Centre in 2009. The hospital is among the first single-specialty gastroenterology hospitals in India to receive NABH accreditation.[1]

He has served as:

  • President of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopists of India (SGEI)
  • President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG)
  • Adjunct Professor at Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University

He has conducted over 50 national and international workshops in therapeutic endoscopy and has mentored hundreds of doctors through fellowship programs.[2]

Innovation

Dr. Prasad is credited with inventing the Hemoseal Spray, a medical device used to control gastrointestinal bleeding during endoscopic procedures. The innovation has been recognized as a first-of-its-kind in India and has drawn international attention.[2]

He has authored and edited several academic resources, including the medical textbook Acid Peptic Disease and Beyond.

Public health and social work

Since the 1990s, Dr. Prasad has organized free medical camps and outpatient clinics for underserved communities in Udumalpet and Coimbatore.[1]

His public health contributions include:

  • Two Guinness World Records for hepatitis awareness campaigns[2]
  • Vaccination drives distributing over 350,000 doses of hepatitis B vaccine in collaboration with Rotary International[1]
  • Launch of the Save Our Daughters – India initiative with former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, supporting the education of orphaned girls[2]
  • Cholera outbreak response and fundraising for public health emergencies[3]
