Narayan Hulse is an Indian orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement surgery. He serves as Principal Director of Orthopaedics and Senior Joint Replacement Surgeon at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore, and Chairman of the Specialty Council of Orthopaedics for Fortis Healthcare, India.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Hulse completed his MBBS from Bangalore Medical College and his postgraduate training in orthopedics at Madras Medical College, where he received both University and State Gold Medals as the best outgoing orthopedic trainee.[2]
Higher education
[edit]Hulse pursued advanced surgical training in the United Kingdom through the West of Scotland Deanery. He obtained:
- MRCS (General Surgery) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
- FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
- MCh (Orthopaedics) from the University of Liverpool[2]
He completed fellowship training in joint replacement surgery at St. Michael's University Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada, and pelvic acetabular trauma at St. Georges Hospital, London.[2]
Career
[edit]Hulse has worked in hospitals across three continents before joining Fortis Healthcare in Bangalore. He currently holds dual roles as Principal Director of Orthopaedics at Fortis Hospital and Chairman of the Specialty Council of Orthopaedics for Fortis Healthcare, India.[2]
Surgical practice
[edit]Hulse has performed over 7,000 joint replacement surgeries during his career.[2] He specializes in conventional and robotic joint replacement procedures, arthroscopy, and pelvic-acetabular trauma surgery.
He was the first surgeon in Karnataka to complete over 200 Mako robotic joint replacement surgeries within five months of the technology's launch in the region.[2] He has since performed over 2,000 robotic joint replacements at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road.
Research and publications
[edit]Hulse has published research articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and authored two research theses.[3] His research interests include computer-aided orthopedic surgery and alternative bearing surfaces in joint replacements.
