Dominique “FAIF” Owens is an American author, recording artist, and mental health advocate. He is the founder of the FAIF Foundation and co-founder of MindFest, a mental health awareness festival launched in Louisville, Kentucky. Owens is also a recording artist formerly known under the name FAIF (*For Anyone In Fear*), and has been recognized for using his creative work to promote healing, youth empowerment, and community wellness.
Early life
[edit]Owens was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2014, he survived a fatal car crash that claimed the lives of his best friend Kerry Benson and Benson’s girlfriend Germina Cruz. The experience became a defining moment in Owens’ life and inspired his future advocacy work. He has openly discussed the trauma and long recovery process, including learning to walk again.[1]
Career
[edit]Music and BET's Tales
[edit]Owens began his music career performing under the name FAIF. In 2019, his songs “No Rush” and “Lowkation” were featured in BET’s television series Tales, a scripted anthology series produced by Irv Gotti.[2]
That same year, he was nominated in six categories at the Kentucky Urban Entertainment Awards and won R&B Artist of the Year.[3]
Books
[edit]In August 2022, Owens released the bilingual children’s book How Are You Doing Today? / ¿Cómo Estás Hoy?, which helps children identify and talk about their emotions.[4]
On November 11, 2023, he published his memoir, Beyond the Crash: Rebuilding a Life Shattered by Loss, which recounts his recovery from trauma and his path toward mental health advocacy.[5]
Advocacy and MindFest
[edit]Owens is the founder of the FAIF Foundation, a nonprofit focused on using creative expression to support mental wellness, particularly in underserved communities. In 2022, he co-founded MindFest, an annual mental health awareness festival in Louisville that brings together clinicians, speakers, artists, and families.[6][2]
