The Domain Name Company, trading as domain.co.nz is the oldest continuously operating domain name registrar in New Zealand[1]. It is a .nz and .uk Authorised Registrar[2][3]
It has been an active contributor to .nz policy since 1997[4], promoting a Laissez-faire approach to the .nz namespace. It is a profilic supporter of civil liberties, including LGBTQ+ rights, privacy rights and free speech (history below).
It supports the New Zealand Tech Alliance[5]
History
[edit]In 1996 The Domain Name Company Limited formed to register and hold domain names as Internet use was flourishing in New Zealand, while in parallel running of .nz passed to The Internet Society of New Zealand (Isocnz). Cases involving Sanyo, Xerox and Cadbury resulted in the established of formative precedent around intellectual property and domain names in New Zealand[6].
In 1997 as the .nz landscape changed, it worked on the registry transition to Domainz
In 2002 the company refocused on registrar services following the launch of the SRS[7] and .nz registrar competition opened up[8]
In 2003 The Domain Name Company Limited launched the free "gay.co.nz" personals site catering to LGBTQ+ New Zealanders, attracting "300,000+ hits per day"[9]
In 2013 it funded development of what had become a global LGBTQ+ platform, launching a mobile app called Seed[10]
In 2014 following the legalisation of gay marriage in New Zealand the Hon Maurice Williamson MP wrote an editorial for the site in support of the LGBTQ+ community in New Zealand
In 2018 gay.co.nz and the Seed app was shut down as it became increasingly expensive to moderate and Google cited "adult content", blocking all advertising revenue that helped maintain the platform
In 2024 it became an Accredited Nominet Registrar[11] and launched a droplist service enabling registration of expiring .nz and .uk domain names[12]
