It's essentially the ability to break a larger thing apart into numerous smaller components that form a larger whole. Ex you can discern an engine from a car as well as discern a car from the road it's driving on.

It's concerned with the difference between the objects being compared, and should that difference be too small, you may be unable to discern the two independent objects. In other words, it's the ability to distinguish one feature as independent from another. Ex. your hand is part of you, but also an independent, discernible, and distinguishable feature.
