Damian Garth Brown (born July 2, 1980) is a Jamaican-Canadian actor and storyteller known for his roles in Doggy Daycare: The Movie (2015), Kim's Convenience (2016), and Downsizing (2017). He has also appeared in many television series, notably playing the lead role of James King in House Out of Order.
Brown began his career in Jamaica, where he was involved in youth advocacy and theatre. He later pursued a career in acting in Canada before relocating to Los Angeles, California, where he currently resides.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Brown was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, and is the eldest of five children.[2] Growing up in challenging economic conditions, he helped support his family through various jobs, including street vending and working at local businesses.[2]
He became involved with the organization Children First, a youth-focused advocacy group promoting education and the arts, which sparked his initial interest in acting and community activism. He credits the organization for providing him "a voice when I didn't think I had one."[2]
Brown later earned a Certificate in the Principles and Practice of Social Work from the University of the West Indies. He then moved to Canada, where he attended York University on a full academic scholarship from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).[3] He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Theatre Arts, and also received York University's International Student Award of Excellence.[3] Brown was then accepted to study law at the University of Exeter but decided to pursue acting instead.
Advocacy and community involvement
[edit]Brown has actively participated in youth advocacy and community development. As a UNFPA International Goodwill Youth Ambassador, he represented Caribbean youth at international events, including the State of the World Population Report Launch in London (2003)[4] and the International Conference on Population and Development in Geneva (2004).[5] He also served on the UNFPA Youth Advisory Panel, addressing global youth issues affecting marginalized communities. Brown has stated, "I've seen firsthand how art can change lives. Whether it's through film, theatre, or youth programs, storytelling has the power to heal, educate, and transform communities."[6]
Brown previously worked as a Youth Projects Coordinator and Restorative Justice Practitioner at Peacebuilders International in Toronto, facilitating restorative justice workshops, coordinating crisis response for at-risk communities, and leading life skills programs at the Toronto Jail.[2] He has publicly expressed concern about youth incarceration rates, particularly regarding young Black men, stating, "It pains me to see so many young Black men in the justice system when I know they have the potential to do so much more."[2] Brown has also provided restorative justice consultation services to non-profit organizations and has also worked as a legal coordinator for a corporate company, handling pro se civil litigation cases.
