Cristóbal Fuentes Cristóbal Fuentes Tovar is a Spanish-American corporate executive and metallurgical engineer best known as the former CEO of North American Stainless (NAS), a subsidiary of the Spanish multinational Acerinox S.A. Fuentes served as CEO of NAS from 2010 to May 2025 and currently serves as Senior Advisor to the company. Fuentes played a key role in establishing NAS as the largest fully integrated stainless steel producer in the United States (MI2KY).
Early Life and Education Fuentes began working at Acerinox's Algeciras, Spain, plant after earning a master's degree in metallurgical engineering. In 1990, he relocated to Carrollton, Kentucky, to oversee the construction and operation of NAS's greenfield initiative. The plant was designed for efficiency, with all production lines in one location and convenient transportation access for supplies and distribution (MI2KY).
Career Fuentes joined Acerinox in 1981 and had a significant part in the launch of NAS, which began operations in 1990. Under his leadership, NAS had 13 expansions, such as establishing service centers in Mexico, Canada, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Illinois. NAS invested $244 million in January 2023 to create 70 new positions, further consolidating its supremacy in the industry (Recycling Today).
In addition to his NAS appointment, Fuentes served as Chairman and Director of Bahru Stainless, another Acerinox subsidiary, between 2016 and 2020. Fuentes is also a member of the board of directors at VDM Metals USA, which is a German affiliate of Acerinox (MI2KY).
Retirement and Legacy After 44 years of service at Acerinox, Fuentes retired as NAS CEO on May 21, 2025, and transitioned into a Senior Advisor role. He was succeeded by Clive Grannum, a veteran of the materials industry (Recycling Today).
Personal Life Fuentes has been a resident of Carrollton, Kentucky, since 1990. He and his family have been involved community members. His daughter Clara graduated from the University of Notre Dame and works as a pediatrician at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (MI2KY).
