CrewLAB is a sports team management platform designed for endurance teams, initially focusing on rowing. It offers tools for workout logging, coach-to-athlete communication, team challenges, and real-time analytics to foster accountability and cohesion across remote or off‑season training.[1]. It is based in Los Angeles, California.
History
[edit]CrewLAB was founded in 2019 by Simon Hoadley (Head Coach & former UCLA rowing coach), and Tim Maytom and Dominic Pardini (both former Captains at UCLA Rowing), following their experiences using fragmented coaching tools like spreadsheets, group chats, and planning systems in boathouses and camps[2]. The founders met in the 2010's as coaches and captains of the UCLA rowing crew team. Originally launched to support rowing teams in 2020, by 2025 it had expanded to serve over 1000 teams worldwide .The platform is venture-backed, raising approximately US $1.6 million in pre‑seed funding by mid‑2023[3] .
In December 2023, CrewLAB entered a strategic partnership with USRowing, providing member organizations with tailored onboarding and extended trials[4]
In October 2024, a similar collaboration was announced with Rowing New Zealand [5]
By 2024, CrewLAB claimed over 10,000 athletes using the platform across rowing, running, swimming, and triathlon, with growth across North America, Australasia, and Europe[6]
Overview
[edit]CrewLAB is a digital platform that allows coaches and athletes to log training activities, communicate, and monitor team engagement. It is primarily used in endurance sports such as rowing, running, and swimming. Athletes can record activities including on-water sessions, rowing ergometer workouts, runs, cross-training, and strength sessions. Logged activities typically include metrics such as distance, duration, perceived exertion (RPE), wellness indicators (e.g. sleep, mood), and journalling notes or reflections.
Workouts can be assigned by coaches, self-logged by athletes, or imported from third-party apps such as Garmin, and Concept2’s ErgData. CrewLAB supports both structured training plans and flexible, open logging.
The platform enables coaches to view team-wide analytics, individual athlete consistency, and readiness trends. Communication features include daily mental health check-ins, athlete comments, and integrated feedback threads. Teams can also organize group challenges, such as the Summer Smasher, which awards points for consistent training and interaction during the off-season.
CrewLAB is accessible via web browser and mobile app, and is used by teams in both in-person and remote training environments.
