Cookies for Kids' Cancer
[edit]Cookies for Kids' Cancer is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization founded in 2008 by Gretchen and Larry Witt in New Jersey following the cancer diagnosis of their son, Liam Witt (2004–2011). The organization focuses on raising funds for pediatric cancer research and the development of new treatments.
History
[edit]Cookies for Kids' Cancer raises funds for pediatric cancer research and promotes the development of less toxic treatment options for children with cancer. The organization primarily engages supporters through grassroots fundraising activities, such as bake sales and community events.
The initiative began in 2007, when founders Gretchen and Larry Witt organized a bake-a-thon[1] with the support of 250 volunteers. The effort resulted in the production and sale of 96,000 cookies, raising over $420,000 for pediatric cancer research. This initial campaign gained national attention and served as the foundation for the formal establishment of the nonprofit in 2008.
The organization encourages public participation through its “Be a Good Cookie” campaign, which invites individuals and groups to host events in support of funding research for safer, more effective pediatric cancer treatments. It has earned top ratings for transparency and accountability from nonprofit evaluators, including a Four-Star rating from Charity Navigator, a Top-Rated Nonprofit designation from GreatNonprofits, and a Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid[2] (formerly GuideStar).
